In the late seventies, one surgeon, one hospital administrator, and two developers had a vision to form a multi-specialty free standing ambulatory surgery center. They united in partnership and built the Lexington Surgery Center. The facility was a 10,000 square foot facility located at 1725 Harrodsburg Road. The center opened in 1981. In 1983, the center became the flagship for a new company, Surgical Care Affiliates, based in Nashville, TN. In 1996, Surgical Care Affiliates merged with Healthsouth Corporation and Healthsouth became the majority owner. In 2002, Healthsouth Lexington Surgery Center moved to a new building location due to growth and expansion. The facility is now located in a 27,000 square foot facility located at 1451 Harrodsburg Road Suite 102. July 1, 2007 Surgical Care Affiliates, a private equity company, bought the surgical division of Healthsouth and became the general partner of the Lexington Surgery Center, Ltd. July 2010 Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA), the general partner, completed a joint venture with Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) of Kentucky creating the general partnership “Surgical Center of Lexington” with SJHS becoming the majority general partner and SCA the managing partner. Lexington Surgery Center has provided quality outpatient surgical care to over 300,000 patients since 1981. The facility was one of the first 50 outpatient surgery centers in the United States. The Lexington Surgery Center takes great satisfaction in “Setting the Standard in Outpatient Surgery”.
In 2005, the Lexington Surgery Center, partnering with the vision of Dr. Andrew Moore, II, became the first surgery facility in the country to establish the cost free and volunteer program of Surgery on Sunday, Inc (SOS). SOS provides outpatient surgical services to the working poor who do not meet the qualifications for medical assistance. The surgery is performed on the third Sunday of each month with an all volunteer staff at no cost to the patient. The template of this program has been the shining example for multiple sites for the SOS program in the country. The Lexington Surgery Center’s commitment to this program is unending with continued enthusiasm to provide safe surgical care to the needs of the community.
